FSHN GSA Role
Treasurer
Who are you and what’s your research about?
Deven is a PhD student conducting research in the Jin and Miller Labs within the FSHN department. He earned his B.S. in Food Science and Human Nutrition and an M.S. in systems management both from the University of Illinois Urbana Champaign.
His area of focus is on the bio engineering of microorganisms for food applications, particularly those in fermentation systems. Specific projects include creating a defined kombucha starter culture, minimizing the flavor profile of yeast strains for more neutral tasting products and the production of novel compounds from S. cerevisiae.
Personal hobbies include cooking, gardening, beekeeping and strength/endurance sports.
Why is the FSHN GSA important to you?
FSHN GSA is important because it provides a sense of community for our department. Science is an inherently collaborative field, and the extra familiarity the GSA provides via activities goes a long way to insure a more cohesive group.
